Tottenham has confirmed that James Maddison has withdrew from the most recent England squad due to injury.
The midfielder appeared to injure his ankle and was substituted off the field before halftime in Monday’s loss to Chelsea.
The former Leicester City player was one of several players included in Gareth Southgate’s squad despite suffering knocks in the previous week for England’s final European Championship qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia on Thursday.
Maddison’s future with the team was encouraged by Gareth Southgate, but Spurs have now declared he won’t be playing during the year’s last international break.
A club statement stated, “We can confirm that James Maddison has been withdrawn from the England squad due to an ankle injury.”
“The midfielder will stay at Hotspur Way for rehabilitation with the club’s medical staff and will not play in the Three Lions’ UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.”
Maddison is a serious doubt for Tottenham’s Saturday lunchtime match against Wolves due to his withdrawal from international duty.
The 26-year-old, who has three goals and five assists this season, has started all of Ange Postecoglou’s team’s league games and was a major contributor to their rise to the top of the Premier League before Manchester City overtook them last weekend.
Due to the red cards they received in the 4-1 loss to Chelsea, Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie will be serving suspensions this weekend, which will severely hurt Spurs.
Romero’s straight red card will also prevent him from playing against Manchester City and Aston Villa.
After suffering a hamstring injury on Monday night while pursuing Blues striker Nicolas Jackson, Micky van de Ven hobbled off shortly after Maddison.
The Dutchman won’t require surgery, but Spurs will likely be without him until the beginning of 2024, which presents a significant center-half quandary.
Meanwhile, Richarlison has stated that he will be having surgery.
