Cole Palmer, a star for Chelsea, attempted to observe Manchester City’s strategies during a thrilling first encounter with his old team.
Palmer, who left City after 15 years for Chelsea on deadline day for a reported £40 million, had the final say in stoppage time, putting a cool penalty past Ederson to tie the score at four.
The champions took the lead thanks to a penalty kick from Erling Haaland after Marc Cucurella had grabbed him inside the area, but Thiago Silva and Raheem Sterling’s goals put them down 2-1.
Just before the half ended, Manuel Akanji tied the score, and two minutes later, Haaland scored his second.
After Thiago Silva’s careless leg assisted Rodri in scoring what appeared to be the winning goal, Nicolas Jackson equalized in the 67th minute.
But after Ruben Dias substituted Armando Broja late in the game, Palmer had the last say to earn Chelsea a point.
The England Under 21 international was booked in the first half of the match for attempting to scuff the penalty spot, just like Alejandro Garnacho did for Manchester United, despite having an exciting and impressive game against City.
Late in the game, though, he also made an attempt at some more mind tricks. There was a dangerous free-kick for City, and several players were congregating to decide on the routine.
In a hilarious moment, Palmer stood up in the middle of the conversation, trying to pry out some secrets, only for Haaland to show up and push him away.
Kyle Walker, the captain of City, sent the free kick sailing over the bar.
Under Mauricio Pochettino, Palmer has already played more minutes for Chelsea than he did for City and has grown into one of the team’s key players.
He has been Chelsea’s primary creator, and on Sunday, he converted his fourth penalty of the year.
And Jamie Carragher, who scored goals for City in the Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup, has praised his decision to leave the team in the summer and pursue new opportunities.
He made the following statement while appearing on Sky Sports: “If he keeps up his current pace, his body of work here will be far superior to his work at Manchester City and any medals he may have received.
To be honest, I think it’s absurd. Everyone contributes, but you can all tell when you’ve had a significant impact on a team’s performance.
“He’s a major part now in this Chelsea team and he almost feels like the main man.”
