Following television pundit Ugo Monye’s encounter with the “most blatant racism” he has heard at Sandy Park, the Exeter Chiefs have released a second statement.
According to former England international Monye, the incident happened as he was leaving the stadium after the Chiefs defeated Gloucester 25–24 in the Premiership.
The 40-year-old clarified that one fan ran through the throng and yelled a racist epithet multiple times, which naturally infuriated Monye on Sunday night.
Ugo Monye is “so over it.”
“A disgrace. The former British and Irish Lion and Harlequins player posted on X, the former Twitter platform, saying, “Not a single person said a word, challenged or even reported it.”
After a small altercation, he leaves, and supporters are now telling me, “We’re with you.” I have you with me, B******S. You weren’t with me when the most egregious racism I’ve ever witnessed or heard from a spectator at a live game was displayed. So annoyed.
Exeter looked into the situation right away, and Monye got a number of responses, most of which were filled with anger and sympathy for the former player’s situation.
The Premiership team has since updated their website, revealing that the startling incident was caught on camera at Sandy Park, less than twenty-four hours later.
Following the reported incident of racial abuse on Sunday, November 19, which happened outside of the stadium and not within our grounds, at the end of our Gallagher Premiership match with Gloucester Rugby, Exeter Rugby Club has been working closely with Devon & Cornwall Police, according to the statement.
“The incident was caught on camera, and the club will continue to work closely with the authorities to support their investigations. This evidence, along with all pertinent information, has been passed to Devon & Cornwall Police.”
No-tolerance rule
The club went on, saying: “We would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone who has contacted the club with statements and details about the incident. We are aware that our fans do not behave in this way.
“Exeter Chiefs have a zero-tolerance policy for this kind of behavior, and we have taken prompt action to make sure that this has been addressed in accordance with the guidance of all relevant authorities.”
“We would ask anyone with information about this incident to get in touch with Devon & Cornwall Police and mention reference number 258 20/11/23.”
