AS Roma has reportedly expressed interest in signing Tottenham defender Eric Dier during the upcoming January transfer window, per reports from RomaGiallorossa.

Former Spurs manager Jose Mourinho, who is currently managing Roma, is said to have specifically stated that he would like to get back together with Dier, whom he coached at N17.

In an attempt to strengthen his defensive options, Mourinho has’specifically requested’ that Roma sign the adaptable England star, who can play both defense and midfield.

The report claims that Roma director Pinto is leaning toward bringing in Chelsea defenders Malang Sarr and Trevoh Chalobah, but Mourinho believes the 29-year-old is the best player the team could acquire.

Chelsea might be affected by the proposed transfer as well. According to reports, Chelsea was considering trading Roma’s Tammy Abraham for Sarr and Chalobah, but Mourinho’s preference for Dier might thwart any such plans.

According to the report, Eric Dier was being sought by Roma in the summer but a deal could not be reached because Spurs wanted too much money for a player whose contract was expiring in a year.

But according to recent reports, Roma is once again interested in a deal. If it can be done for a price between €4-5 million, the London club would view it as a respectable gain rather than losing him for nothing in the summer.

A chance to work with Mourinho again could influence Dier’s decision, despite reports that he would prefer to stay at Spurs until the end of the season and then leave on a free.

Spurs will resume negotiations for several summer targets in January – Journalist

According to journalist Paul Brown, Tottenham Hotspur will renew their interest in several of the same targets during the January transfer window, carrying on from where they left off last summer.

Over the past few weeks, a lot has been written and discussed regarding Tottenham’s January plans. According to Football Insider, the club’s top priorities are to sign a defensive midfielder and a center-back.

The North London team is believed to be keeping a few of the center backs it chased in the summer on its wishlist for January, including Lloyd Kelly of Bournemouth, Trevor Chalobah of Chelsea, and Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace (GiveMeSport).

But in recent weeks, a few new players have also surfaced, with Al-Ittihad winger Jota (TEAMtalk), Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips (Football Transfers), and Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez (Mirror) also reportedly being watched by Tottenham.

Reputable reporters like David Ornstein (Q&A on The Athletic) and Fabrizio Romano (CaughtOffside) have stated over the past two weeks that Spurs are tight for cash and will need to be “creative” in the transfer market.

“They have several deals they can still work on involving players from the continent where contact was made, talks were held, and for whatever reason one of the two sides in the transaction backed away, in the end,” Brown said to GiveMeSport when questioned about Tottenham’s January plans.

“I do believe they will sign a center back, and they have a list they can work through when it comes to negotiations and understanding what would be required to put together a financial package to get one of these guys.”

It shouldn’t be too difficult if Spurs were serious about signing a center back in January, which I think they most likely will.

Tottenham will still be keeping an eye on some of the summer targets, but given that the team’s recruitment department has been reorganized since Johan Lange and Rob Mackenzie came through the door, they will also probably have a lot of new players on their wishlist.
