After learning that Lille has drastically reduced their asking price for the striker, Daniel Levy and Ange Postecoglou of Tottenham are reportedly getting ready to make a move to sign Jonathan David.
This summer, the north London team said an emotional goodbye to their talisman striker, Harry Kane, who left to join Bayern Munich in Germany after demonstrating his uncanny eye for goal. Many thought Tottenham would have a dismal season because of the departure of their best player and star player.
But the Australian coach has already had an impact in N17, switching Spurs back to a fast-paced 4-2-3-1 formation from Antonio Conte’s three-man defensive line. Tottenham supporters could be excused for reacting to their former talisman’s outstanding start to life in the Bundesliga with a “Harry who?” after going their first ten games without a loss.
Since then, though, Tottenham’s season seems to have turned around after a devastating—and partly self-inflicted—4-1 home loss to infamous team Chelsea. A number of injuries and a suspension have exposed how thin and unreliable their squad is.
And shortly before the international break, at Wolves, those worst fears were realized as they allowed a relatively comfortable 1-0 lead to slip away thanks to two late goals.
It is now abundantly clear that Postecoglou’s team still requires some reinforcements.
And in less than a month, when the January window opens for business, Postecoglou and Levy will be unable to put off making their winter shopping list.
Spurs are worried that Dane Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, a free agent, may leave, so a new central midfield player is anticipated to play a key role.
In light of this, the club has learned that a Roma star is expected to accept an offer of €30 million (£26 million).
Jonathan David can move in on a reduced price, according to Tottenham
Postecoglou’s wanted list also includes a new center-half to rival and cover Micky van der Ven and Cristian Romero.
However, the team would also prefer a new center forward to take Kane’s place as their primary scorer.
With Richarlison in reserve and Son Heung-min taking on a more prominent role, they have handled it quite well. Richarlison is currently injured. But with summer acquisition Brennan Johnson covering for him, Spurs failed to add a clear striker to replace Kane.
But now they find out that one player they watched very carefully during the summer, David, a striker for Lille, has had his price drastically cut.
As a matter of fact, Lille used David’s contract release clause to demand €60 million (£52.4 million) from Tottenham when they made a move for him during the summer.
However, after an underwhelming season thus far, Lille has reportedly cut their asking price for the Canada frontman to just €40 million (£35 million), according to Il Gazzetta dello Sport.
Compared to the 26 goals he scored in 40 games during the previous season, he has only managed three goals and one assist in his first 16 appearances.
Furthermore, Lille’s general consensus is that, should their revised demand be fulfilled, they will no longer obstruct the striker.
The report claims that Tottenham is pleased with the significant price reduction and is currently drafting a proposal to try and lure the 99-goal striker to north London.
The 23-year-old frontman, who was born in New York, is quick, agile, and full of energy. He seems to be a perfect fit for the Postecoglou system and Premier League football.
Spurs may believe they are getting a steal for the currently quoted fee for a player who has scored 62 goals for the Ligue 1 team in 154 games overall.
