At the moment, Manchester United is loaning out Spanish defender Sergio Reguilon.

He was signed by the Red Devils as a stopgap after Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw suffered injuries.

When the transfer window opens in January, there is a “real possibility,” according to Estadio Deportivo, that the defender will end up at Tottenham.

Erik ten Hag, the manager of Manchester United, reportedly had no interest in signing the player, but he had to do so in order to deal with the injury crisis. It appears that the Dutchman is now set to let the Spanish left-back leave next month.

Whether he rejoins Spurs in the upcoming weeks is still to be seen. Relocating to Tottenham might not be the best option for him as he has not been able to establish himself as a consistent starter at the north London club.

At this point in his career, he needs to play, and Tottenham will not provide him with that chance. Reguilon would likely be Tottenham’s fourth-choice left-back if he were to return, with Destiny Udogie having established himself as the team’s first choice.

In order for him to try to get his career back on track with plenty of first-team action, it will be interesting to see if Tottenham can find another club for him in January. Although he was considered a world-class talent prior to joining Tottenham, it is evident that his career has declined since joining the Premier League.

After joining on loan from United over the summer, Sergio Reguilon has appeared in ten games for the club. Nevertheless, his contract has a clause that allows Spurs to acquire the player’s skills if they so choose come January.

It’s difficult to predict if such a switch will actually take place, as The Spurs Web notes. Ange Postecoglou has helped Destiny Udogie thrive thus far, and Ryan Sessegnon is expected to make a quick recovery from his injury.

Ben Davies is always able to fill in at left full-back, so maybe whether or not United views him as an asset for the duration of the season will determine whether or not the clause is activated.

At a cost of approximately ₤25.7 million, the Spain international joined Spurs in 2020 and has since participated in 67 games while wearing the Spurs uniform. Approximately ₤8.6 million is his current market value, as per Transfermarkt.

Though it would be difficult to argue that he was a tremendously valuable signing, it would be intriguing to observe how he might perform in Ange’s setup. Even if Reguilon were to return from loan, Spurs supporters are unlikely to witness such a situation this season given their current strong preference for Udogie.
