Almost two weeks have passed since Michael Duff was fired, and Chris Davies of Tottenham Hotspur appears to be the front-runner to take over as Swansea City manager.
However, as time passed and the ownership made it very evident which candidate they supported, something began to smell a little off as the team gradually dropped to the bottom half of the standings.
It was widely held that Davies and the Spurs settlement was the only thing standing in the way of everything being personally agreed upon. This belief was made even more damning by the fact that Davies was signed for free in the summer.
However, something is not right. As it has done for this club ever since the American owners arrived in town, and even more so now? The Davies agreement is void.
The cause? That may not be evident, but on a transaction that appeared to be close to completion for some time, one could only identify a route previously taken by Matt O’Riley, Ryan Longman, Karlan Grant, Brendan Rodgers (all those years ago), and Chiedozie Ogbene. The list is endless.
This team has a reputation for making agreements and then, for whatever reason (cough, Jason Levein), not carrying them through. It looks like this is another example of a deal going awry at the business end.
Disgusting. That’s also courteous.
We now have to consider the possibility of going through the managerial shortlist, which hasn’t always gone too well, in an attempt to find a manager who is willing to join what is quickly turning into a circus with two chefs in the kitchen.
Or maybe there’s a more practical fix. Sheehan Alan. Although he hasn’t performed too poorly in his role as caretaker, the man has no prior management experience at this level. And the only number-two coaching he has ever experienced has been with Duff and one Nathan Jones. Does anyone find inspiration in that?
Stuart James, a reputable journalist and enthusiast, even mentioned this evening that Chris Cohen is currently being considered as Sheehan’s assistant should that be the chosen path.
It’s not the right time to try to win back fans, and based on what we’re witnessing, this could end very quickly. All the way to League One.
It’s impossible to dispute the better performance we witnessed against Middlesbrough yesterday afternoon. But everyone can see the defensive errors. As are the glaring weaknesses in a team that has been called the best in years.
That was clearly tosh too.
