Jim Harbaugh proclaimed J.J. McCarthy—rather than Tom Brady—as Michigan’s all-time quarterback after the latter helped the Wolverines pull off an exciting victory over Alabama in the Rose Bowl.
Following the victory, the Michigan coach told reporters, “I’ve said it before, but right here, this is the greatest quarterback in University of Michigan football, college football, history.” It took a long time to reach Tom Brady’s ultimate destination, the GOAT. When it comes to that, he has really outperformed the competition. However, J.J. is the best college student at Michigan ever in terms of performance.
Of course, Brady went on to record a 20-5 record in two seasons as the team’s quarterback, helping Michigan overcome the Crimson Tide in a thrilling 35-34 comeback victory in the 2000 Orange Bowl. In contrast, McCarthy had a 26-1 record over three seasons.
Brady eventually came across Harbaugh’s post-game remarks on social media, and it appeared that he agreed with them.
“Go, Blue! Without a doubt!!!” Brady wrote on SportsCenter’s Instagram, along with quotes from McCarthy, Harbaugh, and the best quarterbacks.
The New England Patriots selected Brady with the 199th overall pick. Brady went on to win seven Super Bowl titles—six with the Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—and set numerous NFL and Patriots records.
When the Wolverines play No. 2 Washington on January 8, McCarthy will have the opportunity to do something Brady was unable to accomplish while at Michigan: lead the team to a national championship.

Who will be the Los Angeles Chargers’ next head coach?
Jim Harbaugh, the football coach at Michigan, has been linked to the job. Harbaugh is currently focused on leading the Wolverines in the national championship game. Jeremy Fowler and Dan Graziano of ESPN, however, claim that another contender has surfaced.
Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, “is expected to be a prime candidate,” according to the ESPN article. Johnson attended North Carolina for his college career and has since held a number of coaching positions in both the NFL and colleges. After rising through the ranks with the Lions, he appears to be a top contender for head coaching positions across the league.
Following Brandon Staley’s recent firing by the Chargers, several well-known players have been floated as potential replacements. Bill Belichick, the head coach of the New England Patriots, has also been mentioned as a potential addition to Jim Harbaugh. Johnson isn’t as well-known, of course, but he might be a good choice.
Ultimately, it is impossible to predict what the future holds for Belichick and Harbaugh. Going with someone like Johnson, who could get experience with the team, might be the Chargers’ preference.
Future of the Chargers amid coaching search
The Chargers have a 5-11 record going into Week 18. But LA is not as bad as their record suggests. After quarterback Justin Herbert sustained an injury, there was more uncertainty following Staley’s mid-season firing. In 2024, the team should be able to bounce back; the only question is whether or not they will be able to make the playoffs.
For the Chargers, selecting the right coach will be crucial. Although Staley enjoyed some success during his time with the team, things did not work out as planned in the end. Regardless of who replaces him—Belichick, Johnson, Harbaugh, or someone else—LA will undoubtedly deliberate before deciding on a choice.
