Luke Ayling is set to leave for Middlesbrough and Djed Spence has already returned to Tottenham, while Sam Byram and Junior Firpo are major injury concerns, so full-back is far more of an issue.

In comparison Daniel Farke has the strong starting partnership of Pascal Struijk and on-loan Joe Rodon in the middle, with captain Liam Cooper as back up, while midfield stand-out Ethan Ampadu was moved in to defence for the FA Cup win over Peterborough United last weekend.

Charlie Cresswell is already struggling to get a look in as it is, which has left both the 21-year-old and his father unhappy, so unless the manager has decided to change his stance and let the sought-after Englishman leave there seems little need to sign his age-mate from the Swedish league.

Whether Cooper follows Ayling out of the door at the end of the season when his own contract expires remains to be seen, as does the Whites’ ability to complete a permanent deal for Rodon, so perhaps Adjei would have made sense for the summer and beyond. But Leeds United appear to have decided against a move for him either way so it looks like he won’t be heading to Elland Road in the near future.
