One of the major themes for the 2023 Cleveland Browns season was their culture. The collective mentality of the team enabled them to often out-fight opponents despite enduring so many injuries throughout the year. When a team is winning and things are going well, it’s easy to join and believe in a collective ideal. Coming off such a lopsided loss in the postseason, the Browns now have to prove it’s sustainable.
Since taking over the Browns four years ago, head coach Kevin Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry have worked to empower players, giving them a sense of ownership in the team. They’ve worked to improve quality of life, and invested in ways to help players both during and after their football careers. The focus has been on making players feel valued.
As a result, the Browns have been able to retain more of the players they want as they work to build a talented roster. There is more investment from players, who are willing to go further for the sake of their teammates, and the team as a whole. The 2023 season seemed to epitomize everything they’ve been building. They had the right group of players and coaches that enabled the team to achieve far more than most thought possible.
Time and again, players mentioned how close-knit this group was. Whether in the facility, or getting meals together, they just liked being around each other and pointed to it as a factor in their success. That could have a benefit in keeping this team together with the free agents the team has pending. It remains to be seen. Losing 45-14, there are a few reactions one can have. Feeling hopeless. Losing faith in what the team is trying to do and believing this was their best shot to win. Blame. Excuses. Any of these will bring negativity into the next season
