Leeds United have opened preliminary talks about a loan-to-buy deal for Everton star Ben Godfrey, sources have told Football Insider. The Yorkshire giants have turned their attention to landing the defender after his move to Atalanta collapsed earlier this month. Leeds are discussing with Everton a loan with an obligation for Godfrey. Sean Dyche has given the green light for the centre-back, 25, to leave Goodison Park this month as the club look to reduce their wage bill.
Godfrey has struggled for game time this season and has made just three appearances in all competitions, including only one Premier League start. As revealed by Football Insider earlier this month (4 January), he was on the brink of a move to Serie A, but it collapsed as a result of the tax break abolishment in Italy.
Godfrey has made 80 appearances for the Toffees since signing from Norwich in 2020 for around £25million, but has struggled for consistent minutes since a broken fibula forced him to miss the opening half of last season. Daniel Farke’s side are eager for new additions this month as they push for promotion straight back to the Premier League.
With Pascal Struijk and Joe Rodon starting the majority of the Whites’ league games this season, the boss is keen for added depth. Football Insider also revealed (22 January) that they have registered their interest in signing Liverpool youngster Mateusz Musialowski, whose contract expires in June.
