ESPN unveiled their 2024 “way-too-early” All-American squads. Tennessee played two players in the inaugural season of the 12-team College Football Playoff era, and they are predicted to have a successful campaign.

James Pearce Jr., an edge rusher and former first-team defensive end, is the featured player. AFC West scout recently informed ESPN’s Matt Miller that he thinks Pearce would be the first defensive player picked in the 2024 NFL Draft. Pearce had a fantastic season for the Vols in a breakout campaign. In the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl, he had a fantastic performance against the Iowa Hawkeyes, forcing a fumble on a strip-sack and intercepting a ball to return it for a touchdown.

Pearce, who finished his junior season as one of the league’s top NFL draft prospects, tied with Nathaniel Watson and Dallas Turner for the SEC sacks lead (ten). With his incredible burst off the edge, the 6-5, 242-pound Pearce is a nightmare for any tackle to stop. It appears that the Vols are recruiting him as a defensive back, as defensive backs coach Willie Martinez has been working on this one. Tennessee has recruited the state of Alabama well over the past few seasons, and they may be returning for Gordon in 2026.
