Multiple Michigan players hit NCAA transfer portal

Michigan offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore became the top candidate to fill the Wolverines’ head coaching vacancy after Jim Harbaugh left for the Los Angeles Chargers this week. 247Sports experts Carl Reed and Smoke Dixon agree that Moore is the only sensible choice for Michigan, and hiring outside the program could lead to “catastrophic’ consequences, especially in the transfer portal. “It would be catastrophic for Michigan not to hire Sherrone Moore,” Reed said, via 247Sports LIVE. “If you take the guy that is a huge fabric of that in Sherrone Moore and don’t give him the job, you’re going to put everybody’s emotions in the wrong place. You’re going to have a mass exodus of players in the transfer portal. You’re going to have guys who signed with you on National Signing Day who want out.”

Moore and Dixon went further in-depth on the reasons Michigan should hire Moore, citing team culture and his 6-0 record as an interim this season. They also touched on reasonable expectations for the Wolverines this season, among other things. Reed: “It would be catastrophic for Michigan not to hire Sherrone Moore. Jim Harbaugh built one of the last programs based on family, culture and emotion. You’re going to upset the high school coaches in that part of the country who also want to see Sherrone Moore be the coach.”

Dixon: “We just saw something happen in Tuscaloosa that we never thought was going to happen. Guys were just getting up the mecca of college football in Alabama. These guys love playing for Moore. If you bring somebody else in, those guys are leaving left and right. They’re probably not leaving this window, but when it comes to the spring window, you’re going to have a team that might win five games, depending on who you bring in. They have a team that is connected emotionally and has a culture where they understand exactly what they are supposed to do and when they’re supposed to do it. It takes about 2-3 years just to build that culture back up.”
