The confidence polls are finished for the Cleveland Browns, but there are still important questions to ask. Cleveland has made a lot of coaching changes this offseason in various roles, but the biggest change was the firing of offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt and replacing him with Ken Dorsey. Dorsey was a former Browns quarterback who later found success as a coordinator with the Buffalo Bills — but then they turned him away during the 2023 season.

Senior Bowl Practice Review: Day 1 Defense Standouts
The OBR is excited to have longtime NFL draft scout Ian Valentino providing coverage of the Senior Bowl. Here is the analysis of the standout performances on defense from the first day of practice.

The first round of practices at the 2024 Senior Bowl is only the starting point of a week that often sees the best players peaking by Friday. The Cleveland Browns surely had a number of players who would garner all of their attention in individual and team drills.
We’re keeping an eye on who fits the Browns’ needs and roster-building strategy to this point. We previously highlighted some of the key offensive performances from Tuesday, and now we’re covering the most notable defenders who should be on the Browns’ draft board.
ADISA ISAAC, EDGE, PENN STATE

At 6’5” and 250 pounds, Adisa Isaac is one of the most intriguing defensive prospects in Mobile this week. Everyone knows he’s a freakish athlete who will test out of the gym at the Combine. He set a career-high with 7.5 sacks in 2023, so the senior has clearly progressed over the course of his four seasons in Happy Valley.
Isaac’s speed-rush style fits what Cleveland has chased previously in the middle rounds of the draft. He’s theoretically a great complementary piece across from Myles Garrett because he’s able to clean up initial pressure and can threaten tackles with his own burst off the snap and flexibility around the edge through contact.
Two questions he needs to answer this week are whether he’s strong enough to win at the point of attack at his current weight, and if he is too reliant on his speed to pressure QBs.
At least on Tuesday, Isaac’s run defense was stellar in team drills. His pad level, awareness, hand placement, and shed ability were all consistently clean. This will be a key development for the week.
If Isaac can show a deeper move set and a quicker ability to read his blocker’s leverage and react, then he’ll be a big winner this week and might be in the mix for Cleveland’s second-round pick.
MICHAEL HALL JR., DT, OHIO STATE

This setting was perfect for someone like Michael Hall Jr. to star, and he didn’t disappoint on Tuesday. The quick and slightly undersized defensive tackle uses his agility to get into the lap of blockers before they get set and has several moves to take advantage of his sudden leverage and positioning. Guarding Hall one-on-one where he has space is difficult.
Hall is a plus pass-rusher who can hold his own in the run game when his pad level is low. Like at Ohio State, Hall isn’t quite as effective in team drills or during games as a full-time starter because of his lack of consistent play strength. Still, Cleveland would benefit from his pass-rush presence, and Tuesday reiterated he’s fully capable of maximizing whatever snaps he earns.
AUSTIN BOOKER, EDGE, KANSAS

A surprise entrant into this draft, Austin Booker is only a third-year sophomore with limited experience. That said, it’s understandable that he is as raw as anyone in the draft class. But at 6’6” and 245 pounds, Booker is incredibly intriguing.
The Browns can not only offer Booker time to fill out his frame and develop real physical and mental techniques but also use him along the defensive line. Booker will likely weigh closer to 270 pounds at some point and can move inside to tackle on passing downs. His length and general strength project extremely well to a strong side end who kicks inside.
Cleveland has shown a desire to use versatile linemen in this fashion. Booker looked as unrefined as expected, but he will improve in time. He should be in consideration early on Day 3.
GABE HALL, DL, BAYLOR

One of the stoutest defensive linemen in the class is Baylor’s Gabe Hall. He was boring to scout because Baylor often had him as a 3-4 end who read his run keys, ate blocks, and occasionally shook loose to pursue the QB. But his being boring isn’t a knock on his talent — Hall will have a clear role with a solid set of positives that will earn him playing time.
Seeing him in a less constricted role was refreshing. Hall showed off more moves, better quickness, and a higher upside in individual drills than at Baylor. He had a late-round grade for me at the end of the season, but a continued strong week means Cleveland could be looking to use an early Day 3 pick on someone who can bolster the interior of the defensive line.
DEWAYNE CARTER, DT, DUKE

Another defensive tackle who is more pass-rush-oriented is DeWayne Carter. Though he’s on the older side, Carter has better size and strength than Hall. There’s less projection with him as far as his role as a 3-technique who will get upfield and contribute.
We saw his prowess on display on Tuesday. He’s not as quick as Hall but he’s also more well-rounded, filling his run keys a little better and showing capable of being a bigger contributor, even if his sack numbers in the NFL aren’t dynamic. He’ll win his fair share of snaps and could be a value on Day 3 for the Browns, if he falls a bit lower than his projected range.
PAYTON WILSON, LB, NORTH CAROLINA STATE

It’ll be interesting to see how much the Browns value their need at linebacker. They can find a thumper to replace Anthony Walker with a late-round pick or cheap free agent or choose to get a little more dynamic with the unit. If it’s the latter, then Payton Wilson is an intriguing option.
A freak athlete at 6’5” and 235 pounds with elite production, the biggest knock on Wilson’s game is his extensive injury history. He’s a fast, fluid mover who explodes to the ball to rack up tackles. He’s comfortable in zone coverage drops, and if he can hold his own in man coverage this week, he should be a round-two target for teams.
CEDRIC GRAY, LB, NORTH CAROLINA

There’s some overlap with Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah and North Carolina’s Cedric Gray. They’re a bit undersized for the MIKE role but fly around the field, creating havoc and producing explosive plays for the defense. However, they both miss some tackles and aren’t reliable to stack-and-shed in the run game.
If Gray can prove to be a little more reliable in the box, Cleveland could opt to pair two incredible athletes together without spending a top-50 pick on Gray.
D.J. JAMES, CB, AUBURN

The Browns don’t have a pressing need at cornerback but it’s always worth looking for gems to keep the talent cabinet full of options. Auburn’s D.J. James didn’t have the year some expected out of him in 2023, falling from a potential first-rounder to a late Day 2 or early Day 3 option. However, he had some great reps that reminded us why he was once considered to be a top talent at the position.
James has good size and will fight for the ball at the catch point. His awareness and trust in his backpedal can waver, and we’re looking for any development in that area this week. His physical traits are in place to be a solid starter, and Tuesday was a good reminder that he didn’t lose his baseline of talent.

According to a report, Cleveland Browns and impeding free agent running back Kareem Hunt underwent surgery to repair a ruptured adductor.

According to a report from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Kareem Hunt underwent surgery recently for a ruptured adductor muscle. The report states that Hunt played the majority of the season with the injury.
Hunt is a free agent and is unlikely to return to Cleveland. The toughness required to play through an injury of this severity is hard to imagine and Hunt deserves credit for toughing it out through a season when the Browns couldn’t afford another running back injury.

The Browns are expecting to get Nick Chubb back from a serious knee injury that he is currently rehabilitating. Jerome Ford and Pierre Strong both contributed throughout the season for the Browns as well and it is widely expected that the Browns will be active in adding a running back in either the draft or free agency or possibly both.
