The New York Giants need a lot of help in a lot of places, specifically on offense, and two of the most prominent positions of need are arguably wide receiver and a backup quarterback who can step in and start if incumbent Daniel Jones isn’t ready to begin the season as he comes off a torn ACL.
With dozens of free agents set to hit the market come March 13, Brad Spielbeger of Pro Football Focus has proposed a receiver and a quarterback to bolster the league’s 29th-ranked offense last season.
The Giants have long needed a No. 1 receiver ever since they traded away Odell Beckham Jr. Spielbeger suggests that the Giants look at Michael Pittman Jr of the Colts as a potential option, noting that last year’s experiment to make tight end Darren Waller the de facto No. 1 receiver didn’t work out given his injury issued.
“The Giants have plenty of speed and slot receivers,” Spielberger wrote. “Please get Daniel Jones a big target on the outsiders.
However, Pittman might not hit the market as he’s a strong candidate to receive the franchise tag, which would run the Colts an estimated $20.71 million. Multiple reports have claimed that Pittman is a top priority for Colts general manager Chris Ballard to re-sign.
At quarterback, Giants general manager Joe Schoen has already said that the position needs to be addressed if Jones isn’t ready to go. Adding to the need is that veteran backup Tyrod Taylor is set to hit free agency and may want to move on to another team.
Although the Giants are hopeful Jones will be ready to start the season, Schoen has said they want to add someone who can go in there and start if the incumbent isn’t ready.
Spielbeger’s suggestion, Gardner Minshew of the Colts, who was named to the AFC Pro Bowl roster, offers such experience. Minshew spent time as a starting quarterback in three of his five seasons in the National Football League. He threw for over 3,000 yards in two of those seasons. He was also a dependable backup quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles for two seasons.
It is rare for a quarterback to have such an equal amount of time as a starter and a backup. Minshew could also be an affordable option, as he’s estimated to have a market value of $8.75 million per year based on a two-year, $17.5 million deal.
“Minshew could make as New York’s insurance option for the early portion of the 2024 season as Daniel Jones recovers from a torn ACL, with Tyrod Taylor set to hit free agency after sitting on the bench while Tommy Devito started despite clearly being the best quarterback available,” Spielbeger said.
“Minshew gets to start a few games once again and perhaps fill in if Jones, unfortunately, gets hurt again. There may not be starting jobs available for Minshew after a solid year in Indianapolis, but this is a solid opportunity.
The Giants, who could also be planning to draft a quarterback, will likely want to put a veteran backup on a two-year deal if they decide to use the escape hatch included in Daniel Jones’s contract after this season.
