New Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley has only one more big hire to make to fill out his coaching
GREEN BAY, Wis. – New Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley will bring a new scheme and several new assistant coaches to make it work.
As has been obvious all along given his background and how he coached at Boston College, Hafley will be installing a 4-3 defense in Green Bay. The Packers switched to a 3-4 scheme when they hired Dom Capers in 2009.
From there, the Packers and defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery, inside linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti and cornerbacks coach/defensive pass-game coordinator Greg Williams went their separate ways. Even while not being involved in the NFL since 2018, Hafley has had no problems quickly filling the holes on the coaching staff.

Defensive line – Jason Rebrovich: Rebrovich was hired to coach the outside linebackers in 2022. In 2023, he was given a new title as pass-rush specialist, though his focus continued to be with the outside linebackers. Officially, he will be the defensive line coach – meaning he’ll not only working with Rashan Gary and Preston Smith but Kenny Clark and the other defensive tackles. However, Gary, Smith, Lukas Van Ness and the rest of the defensive ends will be his focus.
Assistant defensive line – Vince Oghobaase: Oghobaase will help replace Jerry Montgomery, who initially joined the Packers in 2015 but has joined the New England Patriots staff under new coach Jerod Mayo. During LaFleur’s tenure, the Packers are last in the NFL in yards allowed per carry. While the entire defensive line will be under Rebrovich’s supervision, Oghobaase’s focus presumably will be on the interior linemen such as Clark and Devonte Wyatt.
Linebackers – Anthony Campanile: The fiery Campanile was up for the coordinator job for the Giants. In a coaching merry-go-ground, former Packers defensive coordinator Joe Barry was hired by new Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver to coach the linebackers and Campanile landed in Green Bay to coach the linebackers. That position was coached the past five seasons by Kirk Olovadotti, who opted to take a job in Seattle, according to reports.
Safeties/defensive backs – Ryan Downard: Downard was part of LaFleur’s original staff in 2019 as assistant defensive backs coach. In 2022, he became safeties coach; in 2023, he was promoted to defensive backs coach. His focus will continue be on the safeties, a position group that could be getting a major makeover with Darnell Savage, Jonathan Owens and Rudy Ford headed for free agency and safety being perhaps the team’s biggest need.
Cornerbacks: This is the last big opening, with a source saying last year’s defensive passing-game coordinator, Greg Williams, will not be returning to the Packers after his one season with the team. “I think the back end is probably where we weren’t as consistent as we needed to be and I’d like that to be shored up,” general manager Brian Gutekunst said last week.
Quality control – TBA. Justin Hood and Wendel Davis held those duties last year. Hood got a promotion to rejoin Jerry Gray in Atlanta. Davis was part of LaFleur’s original staff in 2019. He was a two-year starting linebacker at Arkansas.
