Tennessee received some expected news today regarding their most efficient offensive threat this morning. Running back Jaylen Wright announced on social media on Friday morning that he will not return to Tennessee and will officially declare for the draft. Wright is a true junior running back from Durham, North Carolina. He measures in at around 5-11 and 210 pounds.
Jaylen was a huge asset to this Volunteer backfield, as he was the first 1,000-yard rusher at Tennessee since Jalen Hurd in 2015. Wright put together a 1013-yard season despite splitting plenty of carries with Jabari Small and Dylan Sampson.
His most yards in a game this year came against Texas A&M at home, in which the Volunteers took home a win. He finished that game with 19 carries, 136 yards, and an average of 7.2 yards per carry. He had his longest run of the season against UConn, in which he had an opening play touchdown that went for 82 yards. His most efficient yards per carry game was also in the UConn game, as he averaged a swift 14.1 yards per carry. The junior back didn’t have a multiple touchdown game, although he did score in the South Carolina, Kentucky, UConn, and Georgia games.
Wright has also chosen to opt out of the bowl game on January 1st against Iowa. Instead, he will put his full focus on the draft process.
The running back room now includes Dylan Sampson, Cameron Seldon, Khalifa Keith, incoming freshman Peyton Lewis, and more. Many fans have stressed the importance of Dylan Sampson and the disbelief of the amount of snaps he has received at times. It is expected that he will carry a large load moving forward for the Volunteers as he enters his true junior season.

Jermod McCoy has officially announced his transfer to Tennessee. McCoy is a true freshman cornerback who played football this past season at Oregon State. He had 2 interceptions and 7 pass deflections on the season. He also had 31 tackles in his first season, as he and his team went 8-4 throughout the season.
He will be a great fit at Tennessee since it has become apparent that Tennessee has taken a youth route, primarily focusing on the younger group of athletes and bringing in transfers from the DB group. Tennessee has already landed Jakobe Thomas from Middle Tennessee State, and now the most recent transfer is Jermod McCoy.
McCoy was Crystal Balled on Monday, December 18th, 2023, shortly after a visit to Tennessee that he took on the 13th. Since that visit, all signs have pointed to Tennessee in a positive manner. As of now, many expect Jordan Matthews and Rickey Gibson, as well as maybe even Kaleb Beasley, to get a good bit of snaps, but bringing a guy like Jermod in will be huge for Tennessee and this corner rotation.
He holds good size, as he is around 6’0, 180 pounds, and is quick. The one thing that you can quickly notice about the Oregon State transfer is that he has big play ability. If he gets an interception, he will do anything and everything to turn up the field and put his team’s offense in a better position. He is definitely someone you could line up on the outside or on the inside if needed, and he creates an open window for the other guys in the room to fill in where they fit best.
Overall, this is a huge pick-up for the Vols and will only help them move forward with this DB room. Tennessee has lost plenty of guys, including Tank, Kamal Hadden, Warren Burrell, Jack Luttrell, McDonald, and more, but landing a guy like McCoy will only make you better. It will be interesting to see how the transfer fits in and what role he can play early on.
